If you’re not careful, kittens will stop your customers from getting in touch.
For they are cute and the contact page on a business website is often a cold and rather functional place.
But read on and you’ll find out how to write a compelling contact page that beats any big-eyed furry feline.
Normally, when you’re making your contact page, you stick in a contact form, put your address or phone number et voila: another page of your website boxed off.
But it could be doing so much more for your business. It could be working hard to encourage people to get in touch with you and even buy from you.
All your other web pages are working their words off, persuading, coaxing, encouraging and demanding that people get in touch, but when they finally get to that page, often that sparkle and encouragement disappears.
So, unless you want a boring contact page like mine (I’ve deliberately stripped it down as an example), here are some simple steps to improve the odds of your customer contacting you.
Remind people WHY they should get in touch
Maybe someone has just come from another page on your site telling them how your business is going to transform their lives for the better. They get to the contact page and they’re all ready to get in touch and hire you.
But then *ping!* Oh, My God, Lisa from accounts has just sent them another hilarious email filled with pictures of cute kittens doing adorable things like squishing themselves into vases or wearing specially knitted ASBO hoodies…
(These things happen people, and one day, when the cats finally take over, we are going to be in so much trouble.)
So your potential customer finally comes back to your content page and they’re thinking “why do I want to get in touch with them again?” They forget, shrug, and go back to their work.
Do not let kittens steal your customers. Remind them why they were there by using phrases like:
“If you think you’d benefit from an hour long full body massage to soothe away the day’s stresses and want to find out more, simply fill in the contact form below.”
“If you’re looking for a unique gift to be remembered forever, email us today and we’ll send you details of our bespoke options.”
“If you want to make sure you don’t miss out on this limited time discount, call our office today. Remember, you don’t have to book today to get the discount; you just have to call us!”
“Stop looking at freaky kitten websites and contact me goddamn you!”
The last one may or may not be appropriate for your business.
Make it super easy to contact you
Make sure you have plenty of different ways to get in touch to make sure people are comfortable contacting you.
Some people like email, some like landline / mobile numbers / Skype and some like to connect on a more informal basis like through Twitter.
(Note: When you’re using email, it’s a good idea not to have your email address as a clickable link, but either spelt out like: name (@) websitename (dot) com so that spam robots can’t send you automated spam mail.)
Not only are you increasing your chances of people getting in touch by offering the way they are most comfortable communicating, you’re also building trust by showing that you’re a real person who people can get in touch with. This is really important if you offer services online or over the phone where it is feasible your customers may never meet you face to face.
